Getting To Utila

Utila By Air

map-honduras-carribean There are 4 International Airports in Honduras located in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, and Roatan.

International flights from Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula operate daily from USA airports of Miami (American Airlines + TACA),Houston (Continental Airlines), and Atlanta (Delta). International visitors tend to fly to San Pedro Sula and then take the connecting flight (Aerolineas SOSA) via La Ceiba to Utila. Expect a small 15-20 person passenger plane.

The nearby island of Roatan has an international airport with Continental Airlines offering flights to Roatan from Houston on Saturdays. The schedules of Aerolineas SOSA and Atlantic Airlines are designed to connect with these international flights and then it’s only a 15 minute connecting flight to Utila. map-utila-carribean There are also several charter flights available from San Pedro Sula, La Ceiba, and Roatan airports to and from Utila.

Utila By Bus

La Ceiba is easy to reach by bus from any of the main cities in Honduras. From San Pedro Sula, luxury buses with air-conditioning take about 2 ½ hours, and run direct. They offer extremely tight security, checking passports both at the ticket counter and upon entering the bus. They are extremely safe and offer in-service videos, snacks, and true reclining seats along with pillow and blanket.

Hedman Alas leaves San Pedro Sula daily at 6am, 10am, 2pm and 6pm while Viana leave San Pedro Sula at 10.30am and 5.30pm. Direct services with no air-conditioning are also offered by Diana and Catisa-Tupsa. These services take about 3 hours to reach La Ceiba and run several times per day.

From Tegucigalpa, Viana runs a luxury service, leaving Tegucigalpa daily at 6.45am and returning from La Ceiba at 2pm. Direct services are run by Etrusca, leaving Tegucigalpa at 10am and 4pm, and leaving La Ceiba at 3am and 10am. Cristina also offers a regular direct bus service.

Utila By Sea

Ferries

There is one regular ferry service from the Mulle de Cabotage (the docks) in La Ceiba to Utila. The ferry is called the Utila Princess, she leaves the dock in La Ceiba at 9.30am and 4pm every day, and leaves from the main dock in Utila at 6.20am and 2pm. If you are prone to sea sickness, ask at the Utila Princess ticket office for a free sea sickness tablet. For maximum effectiveness, you really should take this tablet at least 30 minutes before the voyage. The ferry is not known as the “vomit comet” for nothing….
