Course Structure – A Step-by-Step Guide
Our SSI Open Water Diver Course is structured into three main phases:
1. Academic Training – Learn the Essentials
Before heading into the water, you’ll complete the academic portion through SSI Digital Learning. This online module allows you to study at your own pace before reviewing key concepts with an instructor. Topics covered include:
- Diving physics and physiology
- Equipment setup and maintenance
- Underwater communication and safety procedures
- Understanding pressure, buoyancy, and air management
2. Confined Water Training – Master the Basics
Your first in-water experience will take place in a confined, controlled environment. Here, you’ll learn and practice essential scuba skills, such as:
Buoyancy control and proper weighting
Mask clearing and regulator recovery
Breathing techniques for better air consumption
Emergency ascent and buddy rescue procedures
Finning techniques for efficient movement
This phase ensures you are comfortable and confident before heading into open water.
3. Open Water Training Dives – Put Your Skills to the Test
Once you’ve mastered the basics, it’s time for the real adventure! You’ll complete four open water dives under instructor supervision, applying your knowledge in a natural underwater setting. Skills assessed include:
Underwater navigation using a compass
Controlled descents and ascents
Emergency air-sharing exercises
Gas management and dive planning
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the SSI Open Water Diver certification, allowing you to dive globally.
